Artist Statement
My works on canvas are abstract landscapes. Beginning with the premise of the canvas as open space, my creative process uses the grid as an organizational tool. The grid allows me a structural approach and framework to image making. Dividing the canvas into what I refer to as plots, I create rhythms and mosaics of geometric pattern, emphasizing flatness and materiality while embracing chance in what is a controlled process.
My art is directly related to methods of land management and urban planning. I use select agricultural and industrial processes such as platting and pivot irrigation as inspiration for structuring my compositions. Before I make a painting, I research spaces that exist in urban and rural settings. Since my compositions are sourced from specific regions, my works, though with an emphasis in materiality, explore the crossroads of urbanism, environment, and art.
The harvested material I choose to explore these narratives through is not with paint but granular, natural resources I stabilize in resin. The use of ash, dirt, and soil mined from real spaces allow for my paintings to explore line, color, and form while becoming celebrations of place as well as site-specific investigations into land ownership and colonialism. Working with my canvas’ on the ground, the media naturally pools and disperses to create controlled but unexpected results.
Although my use of natural resources reinforces the connection between art and land, these abstract landscapes and mosaics intend to inspire moments of awe experienced in nature. Awe and wonder are elements of art that first drew me to the painting practice. The experience of landscape has always allowed me to bypass myself and my ego. It’s a relief submerging my perception into an awe inspiring landscape such as the valley floor at Zion National Park from Angel’s Landing or the rigorous Delta Lake hike for a pristine and intimate view of the Tetons. Despite my affinity for national parks and landscape, I have always been an urban dweller, born in DC and spending the majority of my adult life in Brooklyn. My art allows me to reconnect with these sublime moments of nature.
